Texas Sheet Cake

Way back when… when some of my children were not even a twinkle in their Dad’s eye, we were introduced to this sinfully delicious dessert by friends that were the bestest kind of friends. The kind of friends that you’d call each other up every afternoon and ask “what’s for dinner?” and know that between the two families you’d come up with something to eat. And then, after dinner, you’d put all the littles to bed together and play games until the wee hours of the morning. Sigh… those were the days. Not to mention, there was this cake!

Texas Sheet Cake

The bestest chocolate sheet cake brownie thing inside of Texas or without.

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs well beaten
  • 1/2 cup butter milk (or 1/2 cup milk with 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 stick butter
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

Cake Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a sheet pan with deep sides.
  • Sift together the flour and sugar in a large bowl.
  • In a small pot, melt the 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup cold water, and 4 tablespoons cocoa over medium heat. Bring to a boil and whisk together well.
  • Pour the chocolate mixture over the flour and sugar and mix well.
  • Add the eggs, buttermilk, baking soda, vanilla, and salt and mix well.
  • Pour into greased deep sheet pan. Bake for 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Frosting Instructions

  • In small pot, melt 1 stick of butter, 5 tablespoons milk and 4 tablespoons of cocoa. Mix well. Print to a boil and then turn off heat.
  • Add 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar and tsp. vanilla to the chocolate mixture and mix until frosting is smooth. Pour over the cake while it is still hot. Frosting will solidify as it cools. 
  • Notes: Can add marshmellows to cake 2 minutes before baking time is up, and before adding frosting. Can also add chopped nuts.
